Be Alert, Trauma Hurts
What is the Be Alert, Trauma Hurts program?
The Be Alert, Trauma
Hurts program includes a program user guide for the presenter, support literature and a
video. The video presents potential hazardous situations typically
encountered at a summer camp for children. These dangers include swimming
and diving, pedestrian and sports injuries, falls, fire, handguns and
alcohol use. The program is intended to enhance knowledge and create
attitudinal changes that will decrease injuries in the 9-14 year old age
group.
What are the program objectives?
The program objectives
include: 1) increasing awareness among students that injuries are
preventable; 2) decreasing the number of preventable injuries; 3)
incorporating trauma care health professionals into the program; and 4)
creating a positive influence regarding personal safety decisions.
How does the program work?
The 10 minute video is
designed to be stopped between various dangerous scenarios. Questions are
then presented to the students to initiate a 10 to 20 minute discussion
about the dangers that were presented in the scenarios. The program
concludes with a series of questions that urge the students to think about
their decisions as well as word puzzles that help to reinforce to them
that trauma is preventable, and that each student has the ability to make
safe choices.
