Guide to Giving
Introduction
The American Trauma Society, PA Division (ATSPA) is pleased
to present various options to you concerning estate planning. Although
ATSPA wants to provide you with information, we do not wish to replace
advice or counsel given to you from your financial advisor or attorney.
We simply want to make it easier for you to share your estate with a
worthy cause rather than giving it to the IRS.
Why consider the American
Trauma Society, PA Division in your gift giving?
ATSPA is a non-profit organization whose mission is to
provide trauma prevention education. The organization has properly fit
over 30,000 bicycle helmets and developed programs on bicycle safety,
farm safety, and so much more.
Recently we learned that
approximately one student dies each week on
college campuses due to
high-risk drinking and a program was developed
to target this problem.
Our goal is to prevent rather than treat it!
HOW CAN I HELP?
What is the easiest way
for me to give a gift?
The most common and easiest way to provide funds is through
cash. You will receive an immediate income tax deduction for
the value of your gift (up to 50% of your Adjusted Gross Income or AGI).
Can I give gifts of
personal and real property?
Absolutely! Gifts of tangible property items and real
estate can be given and you are eligible for a charitable deductible for
their full fair market value. This may require appraisal and proof of
title, etc. In addition to this tax benefit, one avoids the burden of
paying a capital gains tax.
How can gifts of stock
be given to ATSPA?
A donor can give stock to a charity at any time. The stock
must have been held for a year or more in order to claim the full value of
the stock as a charitable deduction. You will not have to pay capital
gains tax on the appreciation had you sold the stock. In addition, one
gets the benefit of a charitable donation.
Trauma is
the
disease of childhood.
52%
of all children who die from age 1
year
to age 14 years die from trauma.
How can donating a life
insurance policy allow me to make a large gift to ATSPA?
You can give gifts of life insurance policies no longer
needed by your family to ATSPA.
This allows your life insurance to be used as a charitable
gift while resulting in significant tax benefits. You can give gifts of life
insurance by naming ATSPA as the primary or alternate beneficiary or
donating the entire policy. If ownership is donated, you receive a
charitable deduction equal to the cash value of the policy. If you donate
a paid-up policy you receive a charitable deduction equal to the
replacement cost.
What other types of
charitable giving would help ATSPA?
Bequests may be given one of three ways. You may
leave a fixed amount of property, a fixed percentage of your estate, or
you may leave the residue after bequests have been made to
beneficiaries. The full amount of the bequest or gift will be removed
from your taxable estate.
Charitable Trusts allow you to transfer property
permanently. The trust pays your beneficiary a set amount or percentage
for up to 20 years. When the trust ends, the remaining assets will be
given to ATSPA.
Endowments and Special Gifts allow you to remember a
loved one or to direct your gift to a specific area to allow your vision
to be continued in the future. This will allow you to leave a gift that
is special to you.
It is necessary to give freely if we are to receive freely.
The law of receiving includes giving.
