I'M READY

                                                I'm Ready

What is the “I’m Ready!” program?

The “I’m Ready!” program is a community program that educates children ages 5 to 12 years on various emergencies and disasters and teaches them how to respond to these emergencies. The program includes a program manual and general preparedness DVD. The program is based on two main sections: General Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Modules. The General Emergency Preparedness section shows how to prepare ahead of time for a general emergency, including information on feelings children may encounter when left alone, the emergency kit, emergency contacts, and family disaster plans. The DVD accompanies the General Emergency Preparedness section. The second half focuses on Disaster Modules, where children learn about each type of disaster and ways to respond. The five modules in the program are fire, hurricanes and flooding, tornadoes, earthquakes, and winter storms.

Why is the “I’m Ready!” program needed?

Although many states have laws designed to hold parents accountable for the supervision of their children, thousands of parents make the decision to leave their children home alone while they go to work, run errands, etc. Some children are left home alone, and some are taken care of by an older sibling, who may still be rather young themselves. While parents are away, emergencies and disasters can arise that require adult attention and action, and the children are forced to deal with these emergencies on their own. Many children do not have the knowledge or emotional maturity to make decisions during an emergency and it can be very frightening for them. This program will teach children how to respond to some common disasters and emergencies, so that they have the knowledge to make good decisions when left home alone.
