Planning a Neighborhood
Safety Day Camp
What is the Neighborhood Safety Day Camp program?
ATSPA has long been an
advocate for the safety of children through our farm safety day camps. The
Neighborhood Safety Day Camp program was designed to complement that
program by using a similar format to teach safety lessons to children in
urban and suburban areas. Children ages six through twelve are divided
into groups that rotate through a number of stations that teach various
safety lessons.
What are some of the areas covered in the camp?
Presentations may vary
from camp to camp depending upon the needs of the specific community and
availability of presenters. Popular topics include: 1) bicycle safety; 2)
passenger and pedestrian safety; 3) railroad right-of-way safety; 4)
tobacco, drug, and alcohol education; 5) poison and food safety; and 6)
basic first aid.
Where are the camps held?
Camps can be held in
several different locations. ATSPA has successfully worked with the YMCA
to present the camps as a special program day at their existing summer
camps. However, camps do not have to be limited to the summer months.
They can also be held indoors at schools, churches, or any place with
adequate space for multiple stations.
How can I plan a safety day camp?
This program is a great
opportunity for your organization to reach children with safety messages.
Steps to planning a camp include: 1) determining a location; 2)
determining what the most pressing safety issues are for your community;
and 3) finding presenters to speak about the issues you have identified. ATSPA
will assist with planning and implementing the day to make it a great
success for your organization and ours!
