Trauma of Drinking, Drugs & Driving
What is the Trauma of Drinking, Drugs & Driving program?
This trauma prevention
program is designed to educate high school students about the dangers of
driving while under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. It includes a
video that takes the viewer through a series of scenes with an adolescent
who begins a journey by celebrating with an illegal substance. The
subsequent scenes include a vehicular crash, a trip to the emergency
department, and finally the struggle to recovery.
What are the program objectives?
At the conclusion of the
program, the participants should be aware of the following: 1) effects of
alcohol and drugs on mental and physical performance related to the task
of driving; 2) legal consequences of driving while under the influence;
and 3) methods for coping with under the influence situations.
What are the components of the program?
The program is divided
into four 10 minutes segments for a total of 40 minutes. However,
this can be adjusted to meet the needs of each audience.
The 10
minute segments include a video presentation, a motivational presentation
by a well-known personality or crash victim, and a question and answer
period.
Why is this program necessary?
In the United States,
drinking alcohol is socially acceptable with drinks at dinner, after work,
and at parties and other celebrations. Drinking and driving can lead to
tragedy, and not just for the driver. In the
U.S.,
87% of those who die or become disabled as a result of alcohol-related
crashes are NOT the drivers.
